Great Honeymoon!

September 8th, 2008

My wife and I booked Nail Bay for our honeymoon after reading a multitude of wonderful reviews in NY Times, Travel & Leisure, etc. It is truly a hidden gem of the Caribbean. We first flew in to Puerto Rico, and arrived on Virgin Gorda via Air Sunshine. This is much quicker and easier than flying to Tortola and taking the ferry, and possibly cheaper. Upon arriving, we were met at the airport with our rental car, a four-wheel drive Suzuki, which was ours for the week. We then sped hurriedly to the resort to check in. DO NOT WORRY ABOUT THE ROADS…the dirt road leading to the resort is half-paved at best, but it actually enhances the experience. No, you cannot go 50 mph on these roads, but it’s easy to navigate. Kasha and the entire staff at Nail Bay are wonderful and go out of their way to see that your needs are met.

We checked in to our room, the Island Breeze aparment, and were immediately blown away. The bedroom was beautiful…the kitchen was fully-equipped…the deck was spacious…everything was even more beautiful than in the pictures.
The first night, we went to the market to get some supplies, and then to Rock Cafe for dinner. We then headed back to the resort, to relax on our porch and make some “boat drinks.” We sat back and chilled to Rolling Stones, Otis Redding, and Jack Johnson. PLEASE BRING SOME INSECT REPELLANT. The mosquitoes weren’t necessarily bad, but once they bite you, it will leave a nasty, itchy spot for about a week. They must have loved me and my wife. Most of the rooms supply the repellant, so don’t forget to be liberal in its usage.
The second day we hung out on Savannah Bay, which was beautiful. We were the only couple there for most of the day.
That night we went to Chez Bamboo, and had a wonderful dinner and then over to the Bath & Turtle for some drinks. The bartender was hilarious and we had a great time. The third day we traveled around the island, up to the top of the mountain and navigated some of the charming dirt roads. We also relaxed on Mountain Trunk Beach, Nail Bay’s own beach. We snorkeled here, and was impressed by the quality of the beach.
The third night, we decided to head to the Bath & Turtle again and partake in the buffet for dinner. The ribs and chicken were great.
We decided to go to bed early that night, so we’d be prepared for the next day’s journey…to the Baths. This has to be one of the greatest, most amazing sights I have ever seen. This is definitely a must see. The Baths provides world-class snorkeling. The caves, huge boulders, and beautiful coral entranced my wife and I for a number of hours. We then headed to a late lunch at the Top of the Baths restaurant, which was great for a beer and a salad. That night, after the long day, we decided to use our state of the art gas grill on our porch and grill some jerk chicken and fresh veggies. We sat around, listened to some more cool tunes, and had a terrific dinner. The last day on the island was relaxing. We traveled up to Leverick Bay, but were unimpressed. We quickly returned to Mountain Trunk beach, where we spent the remainder of the day.
The weather was hot but nice each and every day, with a strong breeze. The locals were so very nice and helpful, and never were we in fear of being a victim of some random crime.
Nail Bay truly is a hidden gem and a perfect location for the perfect honeymoon. My wife and I will definitely be back sooner rather than later.
