Two January stays at Nail Bay

September 9th, 2008

My wife and I first stayed at nail Bay in Jan. of 2007 in the Island Time Village and we liked it so much that we returned in 2008 with my son and his girlfriend. In 2008 we got out of Boston a day early just ahead of a Northeaster (24″ of snow) not knowing if the folks at Nail bay could take us. When we called from San Juan and told them we were coming a day early they took care of everything and even arranged a boat from Tortola to Virgin Gorda and had our car rental person at the boat to meet us!!  We chose the same room the second time because of the FABULOUS  VIEW. From our balcony the whole North sound with the dog islands and Tortola in the distance were spread out before us. Often rising before the sun came up over Gorda Peak (behind Nail bay) we were presented with a ever changing show of nature’s beauty with the lights of Tortola in the distance we could see the north sound being illuminated mile by mile as the charter sail boats headed out to the bitter end or Anagada. Several times we had showers and were Treated to Fabulous rainbows.

The beaches are fantastic for snorkeling as we are avid divers/ Snorkelers. There are plenty of fish off to the right end of Mountain trunk bay, and the left end of long bay. Many days we were the only people on the beach for hours. We will return again in this off season between New Years and February because we vacation to get away and that is exactly what we did. Many times we felt as if we had the place to ourselves.

As to other places to Go : A ride up the road to Gun Creek is a must. As you head up the road the views just keep getting better. Once at Gun Creek you can take the free shuttle to the Bitter End Yacht Club or Prickly Pear island. Once on the island you can find food and libations at the sand box and meet lots of people from cruising boats who are in for the day, or locals who are out for a day at the beach. At the Bitter End you can rent a sail boat or small power boat to do some more exploring and find more deserted beaches. Another good take is the hike to the top of Gorda Peak only about 1/2 hour from the old road to Gun Creek. The baths are fantastic to see either at the beginning of the day or at the end of the day. At both of these times the light is best for pictures and you can get in free with no crowds. The copper mine is great (especially at night) and the restaurant of the same name is neat when the sun sets and about 30 chickens take up residence in the trees overlooked by the restaurant. Get a table on the edge and watch the fun. We “eat to live not live to eat” so I will not go on about restaurants any more than to say we didn’t have a bad meal anywhere on the island. This year we did take in the Moco Jumbies (on Wednesday eves at Leverick Bay) and it was a great show!  Very interesting, both the performers and the crowd watching the show. Also got to watch the NE Patriots get into the super bowl at one of the outdoor bars by the Yacht basin in town. If you are divers, the Dive BVI folks are great and have many trips going to different places. We liked the Three sisters and the Rhone the best but the Rhone can be a bit rough on some days. The island with the caves ( can’t remember the name ) was the best for fish as all the tour boats feed them there.
